Saul Bellow was a Nobel Prize-winning novelist and short story writer. He was born in Lachine, Quebec, Canada, to Russian-Jewish immigrants. He moved to the United States at the age of nine and grew up in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, where he earned a master's degree in anthropology. Bellow's first novel, Dangling Man, was published in 1944. He went on to write several more novels, including The Adventures of Augie March (1953), Henderson the Rain King (1959), Herzog (1964), and Humboldt's Gift (1975). He also wrote several collections of short stories, including Seize the Day (1956) and Mosby's Memoirs (1968). Bellow was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976. He was also the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975 and the National Book Award in 1971. He died in 2005 at the age of 89.
